Andy Suess

Andy grew up in Boulder Colorado in the 70s where his father rode trials and his brother and I did some motocrossing. When he was in his 30s he moved to Japan and got into 2 stroke sport bike racing while he was there. After he came home he moved to 4 stroke liter bikes for a short time but that is an expensive hobby. He is older now so dual sport fits him just fine. Now he is an orthopedic PA and do a little guiding for MotoQuest on the side.

Hometown:

“I moved a lot when I was young so I tend to choose my “hometown” based on who I’m talking to! “

Destinations Traveled by Motorcycle:

“Most of my riding has been all over the US and Alaska, but I have also ridden in Japan. “

Favorite Motorcycle Experience:

“My favorite motorcycle experience is a hard choice. One of my life highlights was going to the Isle of Man with my father and we didn’t ride at all but it was a trip 40 years in the making. He rode trials as a young man and many of the locals there ride trials bikes around the island. I raced sport bikes as a young man and had always dreamed of the TT. We got to spend a couple of weeks explaining to each other why the other one rode the wrong kind of bike. “

Worst Motorcycle Experience:

“My worst experience was doing an iron butt ride. I have done many and this was nothing exceptional. Atlanta to Chattanooga to New Orleans and back to Atlanta in 24 hours. I laid the bike down about 150 miles out of New Orleans and ended up riding home after the slide. My wife had to separate my rear from the seat with a spatula that day. “

Languages Spoken:

“I speak English quite well, Japanese quite badly, pig Latin fluently, and zoom obbie-dobbie language like a native speaker. I also have a handful of Spanish, German, and Hawaiian but only enough to go to jail. “

Motorcycles Owned:

“Through the years I have had 50cc scooters, a couple of childhood dirt bikes and restored a few Japanese transverse 4s from the 70s and 80s (think GS, XS, that sort of thing) My main bikes were a Katana 750, GSXR 1000, and RZ 350.”

Favorite Motorcycle:

“My favorite, of course, was the RZ. God bless 2 strokes.”

Expertise:

“I can ride a little pavement and a little dirt. I can wrench a little on whatever you may have that’s broke, I can patch up a rider a bit (I take trauma call on the weekends), I can juggle, and cook some, and tell a pretty good story with a fib or 2. I can change a diaper one handed and I can even balance a pool cue on my nose. I have had over 100 w-2 generating jobs in my life so I probably have something in common with just about everyone. “
