When our team started to talk about Peru recently MotoQuest founder Phil Freeman perked up and felt compelled to share some background on a portion of the Peru Machu Picchu Adventure he enjoys the most. And when the boss – who has stepped foot on an immeasurable amount of land in this world – is bursting at the seams to talk about a trip, we lean in close to listen.

In this case, Phil is eager to give you a glimpse as to why the stopover in Ollantaytambo is the highlight of the adventure.

The word Ollantaytambo (pronounced OY-YAN-TIE-TAHM-BO) does not seem to roll off the tongue very easily and if someone were to ask you what it was, you most likely would throw your hands up in the air. But once you have visited this quaint little town in the Peruvian Andes, you realize how special it is.

Historically, it is the last place where the Incas beat the Spanish in the field of battle. It’s walkways, drainage system, and architecture all echo the times of when the Incans reigned. There is even an old Incan fortress perched against the mountain side. When you climb up and look down from the fortress walls, you can see how the land was delineated since before the Spanish influence. Communal farming, well organized, and well structured.

Walking the main plaza and perusing the back streets of Ollantaytambo is always a delight, and there usually is a festival going on. We chose this spot for our Peru Machu Picchu Adventure not only for its history, but its location. We spend three nights here and have two full days to explore the area.

One day is dedicated to checking out the ruins at Machu Picchu. We catch a train in the wee hours of the morning and head down the valley to Aguas Calientes, where we then take a bus up to the ruins. We are finally met by an English speaking guide who tours us through the site. Ollantaytambo is the closest train connection to Aguas Calientes, which makes it possible for our group to go and return from the ruins in one day.

The next day is as spectacular, if not more, in my opinion. We take an unbelievable paved road up and over the Andes to the Amazon side. If you like sheer cliffs, curves, old ruins and the exhilaration of climate change from corn to clouds to lush Amazon flora and fauna, then this day will be etched in your memory for the rest of your life. I have ridden all over the world, but nothing touches the paved road riding of Peru.
