The Glenn Highway is a 179-mile (288 km) scenic, paved highway in Alaska connecting Anchorage to Glennallen (via AK-1 and AK-4), offering stunning views of the Chugach Mountains and Matanuska Glacier. As a National Scenic Byway, it features popular attractions like the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site, Sheep Mountain, and King Mountain State Recreation Site and campground.
The Seward Highway is a scenic 127-mile (204 km)2 road in Alaska connecting Anchorage to Seward, designated as an All-American Road and National Forest Scenic Byway. Completed in 1951, it runs through the Chugach National Forest and along the Turnagain Arm, offering views of mountains, glaciers, and wildlife like beluga whales.
The Denali Highway (Alaska Route 8) is a 135-mile scenic route connecting Paxson to Cantwell, offering expansive views of the Alaska Range and tundra. Mostly gravel, this historic route is open from mid-May to October, providing access to fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing like moose and caribou.
The Steese Highway (known as the Steese Expressway within Fairbanks) is a highway in the Interior region of the U.S. state of Alaska that extends 161 miles (259 km) from Fairbanks to Circle, a town on the Yukon River about 50 miles (80 km) south of the Arctic Circle. The highway was completed in 1927 and is named for U.S. Army General James G. Steese, a former president of the Alaska Road Commission. It is paved for about the first 81 miles (130 km) and around the town of Central it turns to dirt and gravel. Much of it is narrow and winding.
The Stewart-Cassiar Highway (Highway 37) is a scenic, 725-km (450-mile) paved route in northern British Columbia, connecting Kitwanga (Hwy 16) to the Alaska Highway. Known for its remote, rugged wilderness, it offers stunning views of glaciers, mountains, and lakes, serving as a primary, quieter alternative to the Alaska Highway for travelers heading to Alaska
The Dalton Highway (Alaska Route 11) is a 414-mile, mostly gravel, and remote industrial road stretching from Livengood to Deadhorse near the Arctic Ocean. Built in 1974 for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, it is considered one of the world’s most dangerous roads, featuring steep grades, slick mud, and heavy truck traffic.
The Edgerton Highway is a minor highway in the U.S. state of Alaska that extends 33 miles (53 km) from the Richardson Highway near Copper Center to the town of Chitina. The McCarthy Road, within the Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve, is a 58-mile (93 km) extension from Chitina to McCarthy.
The Alaska Highway (Alcan) is a 1,387-mile (2,224 km) paved route connecting Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Delta Junction, Alaska, via Whitehorse, Yukon. Constructed in 1942 for WWII military access, it is now a scenic, year-round route for tourists, truckers, and residents, traversing remote wilderness.
The Elliott Highway is a 152-mile (245 km) road in Alaska connecting Fox (near Fairbanks) to Manley Hot Springs. Open year-round, the paved-to-gravel route is known for scenic, remote, and rugged terrain, passing the White Mountains National Recreation Area, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, and intersecting with the Dalton Highway.
The Top of the World Highway is a ~127-175 km (79-109 mi) seasonal, mostly unpaved gravel road connecting Chicken, Alaska, to Dawson City, Yukon. Operating May to September, it runs along mountain ridges, offering panoramic views, reaching 1,376 meters in elevation. It includes a free, 7-minute ferry across the Yukon River.
