Ever wonder how MotoQuest made it into Road RunnerCycle World, and Motorcyclist magazines? We started with good resources and mixed those with experience. Our entire company is composed of riders, and most of our Anchorage crew was born and raised nearby. When we’re not at the shop, we’re on the road experiencing, collectively, old and new destinations. Today, we’re going to share some of our favorite books, maps, and websites we utilize so you can use them to plan your next adventure to Alaska.

One of the best resources anyone renting a MotoQuest motorcycle can utilize is our complimentary route consultation with a staff member familiar with the region you plan to ride. We love to share what we’ve learned so we can set you up with the right equipment and expectations for your journey. Our enthusiastic team is also known to pepper in a few recommendations for points of interest along the way.

Want some help selecting your steed? Start with this MotoQuest blog post which gives great info about our fleet including seat height, features, and recommendations based on staff experience. Within it, we dig into descriptions of each motorcycle we offer at our North American rental facilities. Still not sure? Ask us! We’re here to help.

If you’re heading to Alaska, we have more than a few suggestions. Given our history, you’ll understand why we’re about to drop the motherload on you.

Some folks can’t put their finger on exactly what compels them to ride in Alaska, so our founder, Phil Freeman co-authored The Adventurous Motorcyclist’s Guide to Alaska which could help you either get a more specific route plan, or consider staying in Alaska forever to experience it all.

Want to hit the Dalton Highway to check out the Arctic Circle or ride to the northernmost motorable point in North America? Before our rental guests head to Prudhoe Bay, our agents often share this blog post with thrill seekers to help them prepare for what lies ahead: The 10 Dos and Don’ts of the Dalton.

For those of us who still like to use printed maps, we’ve got a suggestion for that, too. Our staff uses Butler Motorcycle Maps because they highlight the best paved and unpaved roads for two-wheeled exploration, and they’re nearly impossible to destroy.

When the folks at Butler considered laying out The Last Frontier, we were thrilled to collaborate with them! If you’re thinking of riding in Alaska, pick up one of these Alaska maps before you go.

Riding to or from Alaska? Don’t forget your Milepost: Alaska Travel Planner! This dense publication will give you the scoop on every border crossing, gas station, and plastic outhouse along the way and around the state. Printed Milepost purchases also come with complimentary access to their digital edition, so if you get tired of hauling this chunky beast in your pannier, you can always use it as campfire kindling.

Off-road riders will appreciate the topographical maps available at the USGS.gov website for detailed information about trails beyond the pavement. They have some maps available to download for free and more to purchase. Pro-tip: laminate yours to sustain years of abuse.

Nothing compares to connecting with locals and other riders who have experience with the destination you’re considering. The ADVRider forum is a broad example of the motorcycle community sharing the most current ride reports from around the globe. It is the only place where you can sign up for and get updates about the Dust 2 Dawson (D2D) non-rally in the Yukon Territory.

If you’ve seen our featured prizes in the RevZilla sweepstakes, you know we’re buds with the RevZilla team. Thinking about upgrading your gear before your big trip with us? We’ve got the hook-up! Anyone who books a MotoQuest rental or tour with a deposit can request a one-time use coupon code which gives you 20% off your entire order. Respond to your deposit receipt email from us to let your tour or rental agent know you’re interested in one.

We love riding Alaska and sharing our knowledge of where and when to go. Even if you don’t ride with us, make sure to come by our shop in Anchorage during the short summer season and say “Hi.” Our friends next door at House of Harley Davidson in Anchorage have been providing free camping to road weary motorcyclists for longer than we can remember, so they can refresh and reload before taking off again.

We look forward to seeing you when you come up!
