What if we told you there is a motorcycle adventure that is the perfect mixture of impeccable roads and fascinating history, with a historian guide ready to answer all your burning questions? We’d definitely want to know more! Lucky for you, the Trail of Lewis and Clark adventure marries the two concepts to bring you a trip of a lifetime.

As America celebrates Thanksgiving, and the first harvest in the “New World” in October 1621, MotoQuest focuses on another huge achievement in our history – Westward Expansion. Almost two centuries after the first Thanksgiving, the duo of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were tasked with braving the unknown of the west just after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. This legendary duo and the Core of Discovery Expedition eventually made it from just outside St. Louis to the mouth of the mighty Columbia River in Astoria, Oregon.

With a historical achievement like that, you can bet that there are some amazing landmarks to discover. Thankfully, we have the knowledge of one archeologist who helped excavate sites along the trail and it’s looking like he will be joining us in 2020! To get a head start, we always recommend interested riders check out Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. Reading this will help history jump off the pages as you follow in the footsteps of these brave heroes.

But as motorcyclists, historical context isn’t the only criteria to build out a MotoQuest adventure. We need great roads to go along with those interesting stops, and wouldn’t you know it, this section of the U.S. is brimming with undeniably special routes for motorcyclists.

As you leave Portland on this journey, riders quickly make it into the Mt. Hood National Forest. This section of road sets the standard for the trip as we ride into the arid eastern side of the Cascade Mountains along the Deschutes River. Everyone in our Portland rental shop seems to be in agreement that this section of road is one they often suggest to renters as a must-ride.

One of the sections of unforgettable road that you come to just over halfway through the journey is Lolo Pass. As you approach the sign that says “Winding Road Next 99 Miles” you’ll start feeling the excitement build. Every true motorcyclist grins ear to ear at a sign like that. And it’s not just the curves that makes this unforgettable, but also the scenery that surrounds it as you twist alongside the Lochsa River.

We could go on an on about this adventure and all it has to offer. If you are even slightly interested, reach out to us and you just might get a call back from Jim Kohl, the historian himself. Once you talk with the man who’s immersed himself in this territory, or any of our other guides who’ve ridden this adventure, you’ll be itching to get on two wheels and follow in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark.
